Pleasing colors, warmth, texture and angles capture the Salinas Valley feeling

Valley Comfort - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Valley Comfort – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

This is a well named piece on many levels. But as time has gone on, I find the comfort in the painting itself.

I didn’t invent these colors, but I sure find them pleasing together. The V of field and mountain is also nothing new – it is visible in nature as well as in other landscapes.

There is a warmth to the soil, fields and trees which hopefully makes one want to linger here. I really enjoy the Salinas Valley landscape and I suspect that that is the feeling which is coming through so strongly.

revisiting texture and feeling of abstract rendition of hills

The Hills You Say - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck

The Hills You Say – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck

I came across this piece today while making it available again for purchase – I suppose a strange benefit of having to redo the entire shopping cart and database of close to a thousand items.

I liked this piece at the time despite not feeling like it was one of my best – but today I am really taken by the color and texture.

I love the bright orange – I love the way the hills feel like they themselves are being blown in the wind. It reminds me of the color and light right before a storm

something I am seeing today.

creatively interpret events, views, and life

Irrigation Bend - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

Irrigation Bend – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005

Being creative is not just about creating things.

In many cases, it is about creating meaning – or finding meaning – not exactly the same things – but either way about creatively interpreting the world.

Today this piece came up partly by clicking the roulette button(chance?) and partly by my being in the figures gallery. It was also displayed a year ago with the piece I wrote about earlier today.

I was surprised to see I had not written about this. It is a strong piece – it also was the first time I had really observed workers wet adjusting the irrigation spray.

Another important connection to this piece is the the last digital painting I did was called “Irrigation Man” and utilizes the same theme but in a more iconic fashion.

Nevertheless, I think it is the first time since the above piece I have painted anything resembling this theme.

The hills, the bend in the road, the stripes of color and texture, and the sky all conspire to make this a really wonderful piece – also much more enhanced when viewed large.

Looking at painting stages in a new light – as one piece

Horizons is one digital painting in different stages. For purposes of Day of the Dead – it is a metaphor for life and death. Each stage is a finished piece – it is complete in itself even though there might be another ending down the road.

Horizon 1The first piece – like a life cut short – is innocent, open. Though nice to look at – there is a strong feeling that more could be said. It is easy to imagine though how a soul might find it was done.

Horizon 2The second piece – is more detailed – life has more depth, texture, a cragginess – with development it is not nearly as transparent. And although there is a much vaster understanding here, this also has the nagging feeling of there being more to say – yet it also is complete.

Horizon 4The third piece – is more representative of a long life. It is developed, it has unexpected turns, a clearer sense of man’s size and a strong awareness of people left behind still working.

  • These art prints are part of a multi-cultural celebration of Día de los Muertos. Last year Bailando con la Muerte – Dancing with Death had participants from France and China.
  • This is no longer only a Mexican tradition – and with luck it is the kind of thing which helps us to recognize we are all one people.

a comfortable pleasing piece

Valley Comfort - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Valley Comfort – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

This is the last digital painting I created and it is also a particularly pleasing piece to me. Not just because I was using a mouse again – but also the subject matter make this a comfortable piece.

I like the cross angles of the fields and the way it makes my eye move. I like the different texture in each section – the furrowed dirt and the chunky first turning of the dark soil.

The green fields are velvety enough and do give justice to how these fields can feel. But I think I like the mountains the most – the trees, the texture and the transparent quality depending upon where you look – it feels like this to me.

Art Prints of the Everyday Brown

celebrating the plowed earth

Field2Mount - digital painting - art prints -2005 - Dan Beck

Field 2 Mount – digital painting and art prints – 2005

I actually have already written a good article about this piece. But as I was both looking at all the recently visible dirt and also my most recent painting – I was thinking about “Field 2 Mount”.

Here more than anywhere is a celebration of how cool the earth looks in its plowed formation – the remarkable height – the remarkable texture.

It is strangely inviting – despite being so brown. I don’t understand it – but I choose to honor it.

abstract world viewed close -mountains from a distance

Madras Mountains - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2004

Madras Mountains – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2004

We are both at a slight disadvantage with this piece. This is intended to be quite large – large enough to be on a large wall and viewed from a distance and large enough to be able to see the abstract and pleasing art style up close.

I have the advantage of having seen sections while painting it and even seeing a print with a 12.5 x 16 inch image.

However, I have not printed this large – I have deferred to other pieces which are also more interesting small – figuring they are better pieces.

But I know this to be quite cool – and perhaps someday I will get the opportunity to place the piece in a setting which will do it justice and allow for the size print it warrants.

Rethinking When Art Is Finished

three different endings reveal a quandary and open an opportunity

Fennel Field & Sky - digital painting - Dan Beck 2006Fennel Field & Sky 1 - digital painting - Dan Beck 2006Fennel Field & Sky 2 - digital painting - Dan Beck 2006

Fennel Field & Sky – 1 digital painting, 3 endings, Triptych

Having already written on these three pieces, this is in some ways redundant – but not really.

This is very exciting to me – every artist always struggles with when to call a piece finished. When I reached the first stage, I knew I liked the piece as is.

But I wanted to continue working on it. I knew there was more to my vision. more to my impression, and more to be said. But it was also done.

The second piece has depth and texture and detail that is also exciting to look at – but it has necessarily lost the strong contrast of color.

The third piece goes on from there – capturing more of the original scene – truer to the experience – truer to the original intent – but not necessarily a better finished painting than the other two.

Perhaps their art prints should be displayed in sequence as some sort of triptych – and commentary on when to call it done.

same and different painting – both can be shared

Fennel Field & Sky 1- digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Fennel Field & Sky 1 – digital painting / art prints – DB 2006

This is both the same and a different painting from what can be found below.

This piece is more developed – the mountains have a distinct shape and some depth – the fennel field has more of its distinct texture – and the sky is more the way it looked that morning – with a crazy shimmering and shifting quality.

I am quite intrigued with this multiple pieces along the way approach – I don’t think it will work in a lot of cases – but here I have distinctly different finished stages which I can share independently or together.

saving early stage of digital painting as complete

Fennel Field & Sky - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Fennel Field & Sky – digital painting / art prints – DB 2006

This is a fun piece for me – because I decided to create 3 pieces out of one. I stopped at the above place and saved it – because I knew I really liked it where it was.

As the artist creating the piece, I was neither done painting or done trying to create my original vision or intent.

What a great thing to be able to save a piece but continue taking it somewhere else. I like the idea of different stages of calling something done.

As an art print, I find myself particularly drawn to the undulated field of fennel and the equally worked sky and mountains – very pleasing with the blue, purple, and green.
