color changed – backs remain

Fielding – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck – 2005
Despite the fact that the mountains and land just stop when they reach the left side of the painting - and despite the fact the sun, mountains and fields all look rather fantastic – this is one of my favorite digital paintings to be converted into art prints.
This was the second time I had even tried to paint figures – the first was out my window. But this time, I saw the pickers – I saw the curves in their backs – I saw how unbelievable their posture really was – and I felt they had to be in the fields of the painting.
I don’t know that anyone likes this as much as I do – being fantastic and real perhaps takes away some of the power.
I don’t really know; but I know that I still see this scene daily – the colors have been changed to protect the innocent – but the backs remain the same.

pattern of people and field – the stamp of repetition

Bent Over Crowd – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
This digital painting feels different to me – I am not totally sure why – it is a pretty common theme now.
I see the workers in the fields every day – bent over swimming between the strawberry rows. I keep doing what I can to portray what I see and each time I approach it slightly differently.
This reminds me of a stamp somehow – the pattern of people and field – the repetition of similar body shapes – the coupled pickers – the same colored hats and scarves – each picker anonymous – each picker a cog, a clone – each one seemingly interchangeable – and yet the whole scene peaceful and pastoral.
Colorful art prints of this digital painting can be purchased only by emailing: specialorders@outhousestudios.net.

In searching for related repetitive figures / clones found this – did a little copying and pasting – though not in photoshop. Since I mentioned stamps too – it seemed even more pertinent

There is an image called “New Clones” half way down – but found these images kind of interesting – also the different resolution links

clothing, posture, and proximity inspire need to continue theme

Bent Over Crowd – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
Probably could have called this "sea of backs" just as easily – but that just occurred to me.
Some days the strawberry pickers are even more jammed in than this – but this gives a good isolated view.
No matter how hot it seems – most pickers where a minimum of sweatshirt weight clothing. Placing these textured material looking colors was not where I took liberties.
The color coordinated clothing, however, represents the likeness of the pickers from a distance – remarkably bent – looking much like a herd – and diligently working for hours in this uncomfortable position.
Despite witnessing the hard lifestyle, it is also a witness to something beautiful.

hidden figures and colors for the type of day

Under the Corn – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
It is not uncommon to see a single row of corn as a barrier between the road and the berry fields. I don’t know why that is – I can’t imagine it provides that much of a windbreak – perhaps it is tradition – like the rosebush at the end of a grape row (so I thought).
I just happened to notice pickers yesterday with heads barely visible – essentially under and behind the row of corn.
There were many other pickers joining them. The colors kind of just happened – but in some ways I feel they are more representative of the type of day and weather than a photo would have been.
For art prints of this new digital painting, please email: specialorders@outhousestudios.net – thanks.

new digital painting is real and a world of its own

Field Phlat – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
I am yet to really share this with any of my closest friends or critics, but sometimes one feels like one has absolutely hit the piece right.
If one is certain enough, it matters not what others think anyway. Who knows where this stands in the overall scheme of my work – that doesn’t really matter either.
What matters is how much I am enjoying what I created. The sense of space, the angle of the hills and fields, the vastness of the world in front of the picker, and the stance of the strawberry picker – determined and even perhaps overwhelmed by the task ahead – create a world which is both real and a world unto itself.
Since those are things I strive for – real and world of its own – I see success in what I have done.
I hope you can enjoy it as well. Since this is a new piece, please email: specialorders@outhousestudios.net for art prints of this new digital painting.

second approach improves on feeling and intent

Field Phlat – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
I am much happier with this piece – in a sense, it is a do over of the strawberry picker with an empty flat. The first piece, “Field Flat” was finished the day before yesterday – and I was happy with it – even though I knew it wasn’t quite the feeling I had set out to achieve.
The world in this piece is computer fun. I overlapped gradients – did a little copying and pasting – some stretching and flipping, created new paints out of the painting itself, created new textures, blended parts – and just had some good fun with the medium. Yehhh!
The figure is larger and alone, like I had originally wanted – the posture a little different – couldn’t remember the exact way he held the flat – but mainly I just wanted another crack at it – I thought I could portray what I was looking for better.

balancing impression and intention with work itself

Field Flat – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
For me art is a give and take process. I had seen a strawberry picker in a similar posture – holding an empty flat and I wanted to capture that impression.
I created a backdrop – a non-specific but nevertheless somewhat accurate view of the Salinas Valley.
When I started I was expecting a larger figure and less background – but the painting pushed me in certain directions.
I may very well approach this theme again – to create something more iconic – but I actually find this image very pleasing and enjoy looking at it. I like the way my eye travels down to the other field worker and how it feels like the man holding the flat is on the verge of, if not already, moving down to join him.

berrying the theme of harvest and bent backs

Pick Aside – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
This is the last digital painting I created – one of many with the strawberry picking theme. I am beginning to feel like I am berrying the theme into the ground.
On the other hand, I see workers daily out in the fields close to me and far away. This was not based so much on what I actually saw, but more of an interpretation of what I had been seeing.
I wanted the viewer to feel like he was out in the fields with these two. I wanted the fields to feel like they were swallowing everyone up – that despite the depth and height of the rows – there is still a bent back to harvest with.

new work brings up the power of the actual art prints

Pick Aside – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
As I am typing, this digital painting is working its way out of the printer in the form of a full to an eighth of an inch of the edge, art print – printed on Japanese watercolor paper.
I can see just the first figure at this point, but I can tell the strawberry fields themselves are going to be quite scrumptious. Doubt one will actually smell the strawberries, but the layers of color and texture make this art print more interesting than even what one can see in the larger version.
Like every image on the net, nothing can do justice to being there. Because this painting was created digitally, it might be more accurate – but I am beginning to think that digital art may not be - every time I look at one of the art prints I see so much more, whatever the piece.
For art prints of the above digital painting, please email: specialorders@outhousestudios.net.

power of perspective leads to original digital painting

Dividing Road – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck – 2004
There is kind of a nice design and balance to this piece. The road winds through – off center a bit and there are three main areas to the piece which are each bold and clearly delineated.
When I set out to paint the experience, I found myself painting from above. The perspective was coming from somewhere other than my being in the car.
This digital painting is based upon an experience. And in the experience I was in one of the cars – but I think my mind was actually elsewhere – because something struck me about the scene.
There was barrenness on my right with the mechanization of irrigation going on – on my left were multiple crews of strawberry pickers – and there in the center – just passing through – on our way to or from work or fun – we traveled just as much a part of the scene.
