the timing of finishing – art and reality

Further Along Tree 1 – Dan Beck – digital art painting 2008
This digital painting was finished over a month ago. The previous article showing the version of this painting which felt finished, balanced, and worth saving, – based upon the piece itself and not the original vision; was written over two weeks ago.
I guess it is rather apparent that my writing is not keeping up with my creating. Actually I find everything takes longer than expected – my head is generally way ahead of my physical world – but then that makes sense. How could matter move as fast as thought?
And why do we expect things to take the time we think things will take – even if we have done something before – it might take more or less time – circumstances are always different.
But most of us, including myself, have expectations about how long even things we have never done will take.
The finished painting above matched my concept and vision more closely as well as my expected timeline for doing a painting – there is more texture, more depth, more visual confusion – and more what I had in mind to begin with -
What is wonderful about art and life – is that sometimes the head gets to follow the body – follow the physical world – and sometimes the timetable of the physical world is smarter than the head.

out of time

Learning a newly written song, getting lost inside the world of a new painting, reading an excellent book are all a bit like falling in love…
I suppose anything which demands the attention such that the world stands still – that time doesn’t feel like it exists, that puts us completely in the moment and doesn’t want to let us go – has that quality.
River Spring Fauna – digital art painting – Dan Beck 2008
The art above is about the view from above – looking out on the valley – seeing the Salinas river – seeing the incredible texture and color of Spring below – that tapestry of color that pulls and mesmerizes – yes nature can pull off the effect of timelessness as well.
In the nature of out of time – and not in the fashion of deadlines – it seemed somehow appropriate on this first day (it was when I wrote this) of Spring to share a song of joy, love, and being lost or perhaps found in the world of timelessness.
Not part of the Red Eye Recordings – it is a track from 2005 CD: 1danband | dansingnew

ahead of myself

Self Portrait – Dan Beck – digital painting 2007
Multiple meanings are to me as much fun as multiple solutions – and generally more obvious than all the different ways to get to a solution to a problem…
and yes I believe there is almost always more than one way to solve any problem.
In most cases, I find myself thinking through all the things that need to be done in a project and try to foresee the obstacles. Somewhere along the line, I got the idea that the most efficient way was the best way.
I am no longer certain that either that is true or that there even is such a thing as the best way. Sometimes the longer route is the better – and most of the time we can not see our way around all the obstacles anyway.
In art and music – I seem to know this. I start and work around the problems as they come up; but in life – I sometimes think I can no more teach myself than I can anyone else …
such is life.

priceless necessity

Horizon 4 - Digital Painting 2006
Having posted the first two tracks of the “Red Eye Recordings” – a music project that is intended to be listened to in order (for the most part) because there is a story to be told; it is time to introduce the third track with some explanation.
The song – “Money is too important” is about the necessity and the change it brings about – the nature of seeking satisfaction from things or consumerism – How much is enough? – always more than one has – and my observations on how often having money changes people.
And of course, having said that – it is my need as well, to have money to live on and continue to produce my art and music.
I am offering these tracks free – and will continue to – but eventually plan on making it possible to contribute to the outhouse studio fund -
The songs are about my observations – about life – about capitalism – about equality – about sickness – about letting go -
It is both too personal and somehow improper to put a price on -

Money Is Too Important – Dan BeckĀ 2006- to quote the song “I’d like less worrying, though I am not at all bad off, I’d like less worrying, like everyone I’ve known”
- Credit to Johnny Mandel and Mike Altman – for MASH melody and lyrical reference – nothing is created in a vacuum and I kept hearing their lyrics and melody in the music
- Horizon 4 – current art print availability for above digital art and its original prints

where is the hair?

Digital Artist & Musician – Dan Beck
digital photo – dan wearing digital painting self-portrait on t-shirt – the spirit of caricature
As of today – if there is one thing I would like to pass on – it would be the joy and flow of life
when we are not bogged down in our mire of obstacles, self-doubts, disappointment, envy, anger, jealousy, resentments, or simply self absorption
_________
To develop as an artist or maybe just the person that I am – I have isolated myself from many people I both love and care about
I don’t think this was a conscious decision; but like most people, I don’t know how to do everything I want to do – let alone what I feel like I have to do
I didn’t think through the place I am at – I have lived my life and find myself here – going with the flow and not always living consciously
____________
I submit a song – written and recorded last spring – in the context of being sick – alone and contagious – feeling my fragileness – writing about the love in my life – but really all the love in my life

So Much of Life We Do Unconscious – SONG – Dan Beck | 1danband – the lyrics pertinent to the above article – the melody or at least part sounds like a James Taylor song, but not one I can identify – please let me know, if you listen to music and recognize … and yet we always borrow unconsciously …
- James Taylor – November release entitled One Man Band
- 1danband – really I’ve been using the term for my recordings as early as 2002

slow release

Red Eye Recordings – cover art – digital art (painting) – Dan Beck 2007
There is no right moment and yet I find myself waiting.
If we find ourselves sick – we wonder what we were waiting for -
We can understand life is a gift – that the amount of time is limited – but none of us – including me – embrace it until we really feel the fear of death – we see ourselves immortal
we put off until tomorrow – how can we not?
I don’t know why it is time today to release – the music from last Spring – but I believe it is.
Free to listen, free to download – free to donate – I doubt that I will be able to put all the pieces in place today – but I have to start somewhere – and to quote … well Hillel as it turns out “If not now, when?”
proving once again – that one of the most innovative things about music is that melody helps us remember content.

- If Not Now – acoustic guitar and vocals – video – Tracy Chapman – a beautiful melody and partly why I remember the phrase

Creating Changes Rules

Self Portrait – digital art – finger painting – Dan Beck November 2007
I have not been writing much – rather formulating some next moves – next art – next music projects. Too much of the blogging time, we write just to write – to bring attention to our work or simply share into cyberspace.
Whether I am able or not – my hope from here is to write when it is right – when I have something new to share.
My previous self-portrait done earlier this year was done the way I do most of my work – from my head with some tweaking from visual inspection (when available).
This self portrait – also an exercise – of how well can I paint with my fingers? utilized the camera of my new laptop.
I don’t really like the idea of painting from a photo – seems a step removed to me – but I couldn’t resist the technology. And although it is a perfectly acceptable practice in digital art to paint and alter a photograph – that is not the tact I took here – just used it as a model.

controlling what at first seems uncontrollable

My Series 12 – digital painting – original prints – Dan Beck 2004
Simple, colorful, expression – not much in the way of form – not much in terms of movement – but it does have a good feeling nevertheless.
This was not a particularly thoughtful piece. It came from following a concept of being on the cusp between representation and abstract as well as having the smooth colors atop the beige textured background.
Original art, original prints – this has my characteristic comfortable strokes of the mouse – unique to the way I move my hand and wrist – controlling what was seemingly uncontrollable at first.
As a musician, I had to learn how to hear some of the odd scales my fingers had learned how to play – in some ways – this abstract piece is about the same process with painting on the computer.

more to communicate

Foothills Anywhere – digital painting – Dan Beck 2007
Some pieces of original art feel more serious than others – more in a tradition of fine art than colorful poster art or illustration, cartoon, or folk art.
Just as my music has influences of jazz, rock, folk, blues, and classical – my visual art tends to have more than one influence.
Even though the above digital painting is intensely colorful and painted in a quick bold fashion, it is more serious. There is an intentionality of communicating a feeling and mood which is not always there with an abstract piece or a more fantastical piece.
I have been working on other types of art and creativity and this still feels like my most recent work – original prints are not yet available.

the mark of origin – cultural as well

If I were branding cattle, what would I want my brand to look like? Logos and brands are not exactly the same thing. But in the image at right, which I have taken to using as a brand on my artwork – is that kind of literal ‘burn on the cattle‘ kind of thing.
Since I only starting using it in the last month or two, it will not appear on all my art – though I can go add it for future printings of older digital paintings.
The brand has my initials – includes a musical note and/or 1 depending on how one reads – hints at ‘1danband‘ a musical name I use and also abstractly looks like a worker carrying a hoe – a common image of mine.
I have not yet decided on the name for my brand – not sure if it will be read as dB or d1B or if it even needs a name – but I like the identification in addition to my signature – it seems fun. It is also part of the double side of having work which is original art – but is also able to be produced in large multiples – and remarkably – art prints which will always be original prints.
