more or less of reality can still capture feeling

Foothill Views – Digital Painting / Art Prints -2005
Well once I again, I am writing about a piece I have thoroughly discussed.
I write because I stumbled upon it today. I write because there is always something more to be said about a painting I like – and particularly one I like and created.
The rows are less perfect than the rows of reality. The patchwork is more blanket-like than the quilted hills themselves. The characters are more animated than the guys riding the tractor that day. My eye rolls up and down the hills even more than with the actual panorama.
But in two dimensions and a much smaller window – I have captured enough of the feeling of the area to enjoy being inside the painting.
I hope you are able to as well.

passing impression and live oak tree character

Monterey Hiway 1 – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005
I thought I would pick a piece today that I don’t believe I’ve written about. I remember looking over my right shoulder as I drove by this scene – an impression, yes.
The live oak trees on the hillside always gets me. I love the shape of these trees and the character they have. I have never seen these trees anywhere else – at least that I recall.
I have a couple in my own yard and I really enjoy them – the canopy of one is exquisite. But here by the side of the road, they are are similar to the cows which occasionally graze.

revisiting texture and feeling of abstract rendition of hills

The Hills You Say – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck
I came across this piece today while making it available again for purchase – I suppose a strange benefit of having to redo the entire shopping cart and database of close to a thousand items.
I liked this piece at the time despite not feeling like it was one of my best – but today I am really taken by the color and texture.
I love the bright orange – I love the way the hills feel like they themselves are being blown in the wind. It reminds me of the color and light right before a storm …
something I am seeing today.

creatively interpret events, views, and life

Irrigation Bend – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005
Being creative is not just about creating things.
In many cases, it is about creating meaning – or finding meaning – not exactly the same things – but either way about creatively interpreting the world.
Today this piece came up partly by clicking the roulette button(chance?) and partly by my being in the figures gallery. It was also displayed a year ago with the piece I wrote about earlier today.
I was surprised to see I had not written about this. It is a strong piece – it also was the first time I had really observed workers wet adjusting the irrigation spray.
Another important connection to this piece is the the last digital painting I did was called “Irrigation Man” and utilizes the same theme but in a more iconic fashion.
Nevertheless, I think it is the first time since the above piece I have painted anything resembling this theme.
The hills, the bend in the road, the stripes of color and texture, and the sky all conspire to make this a really wonderful piece – also much more enhanced when viewed large.

Art prints & fields of color more pleasing large as intended

Yellow Field Green Hills – digital painting / art prints – DB 2005
Like most the pieces in the Impressionist Art Gallery, the digital paintings were intended to be printed large – yielding art prints at a minimum size of a 24 x 30" framed print.
Although I don’t see this as one of my all time best, I do find it remarkably pleasing – particularly since it also seems a bit imbalanced in some ways.
The funny thing is that there are certain perspectives where the mountains feel this ludicrously tall and the fields were indeed this yellow.
Nevertheless, the piece is about impression not a snapshot of reality.

grows on you; you enjoy being inside finding surprise

Houses on the Hillside – digital painting / art prints – DB 2005
Just like what makes a good piece of art, what makes a good art print is really about how it is received.
I would never say beauty is in the eye of the beholder – for to me that would relegate it to relativism and nothing.
Some people love fast food over all else – I have seen someone go buy it in place of a gourmet meal – more than once I might add.
But my digression, is only to say that an art print should grow on you – it should be a place you enjoy being inside looking at and a place which continues to surprise you.
Unfortunately, one can not know for sure unless one buys a piece and lives with it. Which is one of the reasons I suppose these art prints are such a great way of buying original art – there are a number of economic options.

memory alters impression – emotion requires expression

Viewing Out – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2004
I remember this evening – I went out to see a small art show in a bakery in Sand City – there was said to be some "computer generated art" – it really was more akin to digital painting – one of a kind – artist does one print and saves nothing.
I don’t think that utilizes the digital potential very well, but that is neither here nor there. The work was fun – and the evening took me to a party which was also fun.
And the sky is the sky of that evening – and the view is from a hillside of a back route into the area where one can see this section into the Monterey Bay.
The representation isn’t that close to reality, but it is also a lot closer than one would think.

contrast of color, checkerboard fields, Santa Lucia foothills

Foothills Contrast – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006
While driving on River Road up and back along the Santa Lucia foothills last week – I was struck by the incredible color of what was some sort of neglected weed or cover crop.
Despite being essentially dead – it was a remarkably vibrant gold color with some brown mixed in – it was checkerboard strewn through the green fields.
The contrast was amazing and left a strong impression. The glow and contrast is what’s left – the composition pales a bit – but is close enough to communicate. The grape vines in the foreground – were not in the scene of the impression, but are quite plausible for the area this is from – and it definitely makes for a more interesting view.
I do like the trees.

ambiguity and breaking from convention don’t shake essence

Big Valley 1 – Digital Painting / Art Prints – Dan Beck 2005
I featured this piece once before but didn’t really write about it. I don’t really remember creating this digital painting, but looking at it today – I can flash to where I must have been viewing – looking west out over the Salinas Valley with the Gabilan mountains behind.
There is an ambiguity in this piece in regards to how the hills are sitting – how the fields intersect – it captures without being particularly literal.
I love this aspect of art – not just in my own – when something looks very different from convention, yet is unmistakable nevertheless.
The essence of a thing is not always what we assume it to be.

creating composition from a section of scene

CrossFields – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005
Everyday I drive by this scene, I think I should really do another piece – the fields are all different colors right now – including bright yellow.
But the scene is not inspiring me right now – just intellectually. When I did this – I was wrestling with a problem. I knew the stripes and different level fields fascinated me – but wasn’t sure how to turn it into a painting.
When I saw how small the figures were and how much further away it all really was – I had no choice.
The challenge was to make a piece which at a glance would be interesting. One that would hold a strong enough design to be compelling even without seeing the entirety.
I felt like I accomplished what I set out to do – though like most work – not everyone will see it that way.
