creating interpretation – where like and dislike converge

Field of Hoes - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

Field of Hoes – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005

‘Promoting the creative world’ is about promoting all things creative. Sometimes being creative is about looking at old things in a different way.

Not all of creativity is about creating brand new – actually it never is – no one truly recreates the wheel – anymore than one creates in a vacuum.

What I find fascinating about the above piece today is that the very thing I like the least about the above piece is also what I seem to like the most … today.

The figures were created in another painting space then re-sized if necessary and plopped in – and to my eye they have always looked plopped in – who knows why but today I like that.

The undulating fields I have always enjoyed.

Art prints & fields of color more pleasing large as intended

Yellow Field Green Hills - digital painting / art prints - DB 2005

Yellow Field Green Hills – digital painting / art prints – DB 2005

Like most the pieces in the Impressionist Art Gallery, the digital paintings were intended to be printed large – yielding art prints at a minimum size of a 24 x 30" framed print.

Although I don’t see this as one of my all time best, I do find it remarkably pleasing – particularly since it also seems a bit imbalanced in some ways.

The funny thing is that there are certain perspectives where the mountains feel this ludicrously tall and the fields were indeed this yellow.

Nevertheless, the piece is about impression not a snapshot of reality.

a comfortable pleasing piece

Valley Comfort - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Valley Comfort – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

This is the last digital painting I created and it is also a particularly pleasing piece to me. Not just because I was using a mouse again – but also the subject matter make this a comfortable piece.

I like the cross angles of the fields and the way it makes my eye move. I like the different texture in each section – the furrowed dirt and the chunky first turning of the dark soil.

The green fields are velvety enough and do give justice to how these fields can feel. But I think I like the mountains the most – the trees, the texture and the transparent quality depending upon where you look – it feels like this to me.

back to comfort of mouse painting and familiar landscape

Valley Comfort - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Valley Comfortdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

When I first started this piece and decided to save and title it (although unfinished), I called it “Mouse Play”. The last two digital paintings I did – I used a pen and tablet instead and found it incredibly awkward (to my surprise) – so this was both a relief and fun to use my normal painting tool.

This was not of any place in particular but is very much anywhere in the Salinas Valley. Although, I did notice yesterday a spot which I have been eyeing for quite some time which has a similar mountain terrain and field structure – half is even plowed up – so perhaps I was unconsciously referencing that spot.

The really dark earth in the center I have never tried to portray before. After discing a field – the soil is turned over into big dark chunks – looks like some kind of moon terrain. I think we see it more now because most of the soil will not be replanted right away – as agriculture is moved to warmer areas for the winter.

For art prints or availability of the above digital painting, please email: specialorders@outhousestudios.net. Setting up auto purchasing options for new pieces is more complicated than time will allow right now.

Rethinking When Art Is Finished

three different endings reveal a quandary and open an opportunity

Fennel Field & Sky - digital painting - Dan Beck 2006Fennel Field & Sky 1 - digital painting - Dan Beck 2006Fennel Field & Sky 2 - digital painting - Dan Beck 2006

Fennel Field & Sky – 1 digital painting, 3 endings, Triptych

Having already written on these three pieces, this is in some ways redundant – but not really.

This is very exciting to me – every artist always struggles with when to call a piece finished. When I reached the first stage, I knew I liked the piece as is.

But I wanted to continue working on it. I knew there was more to my vision. more to my impression, and more to be said. But it was also done.

The second piece has depth and texture and detail that is also exciting to look at – but it has necessarily lost the strong contrast of color.

The third piece goes on from there – capturing more of the original scene – truer to the experience – truer to the original intent – but not necessarily a better finished painting than the other two.

Perhaps their art prints should be displayed in sequence as some sort of triptych – and commentary on when to call it done.

Vibrant Color Leaves Impression

contrast of color, checkerboard fields, Santa Lucia foothills

Foothills Contrast - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Foothills Contrastdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

While driving on River Road up and back along the Santa Lucia foothills last week – I was struck by the incredible color of what was some sort of neglected weed or cover crop.

Despite being essentially dead – it was a remarkably vibrant gold color with some brown mixed in – it was checkerboard strewn through the green fields.

The contrast was amazing and left a strong impression. The glow and contrast is what’s left – the composition pales a bit – but is close enough to communicate.  The grape vines in the foreground – were not in the scene of the impression, but are quite plausible for the area this is from – and it definitely makes for a more interesting view.

I do like the trees.

Fantastic Digital Painting Converts to Art Prints

color changed – backs remain

Fielding - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck - 2005

Fielding – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck – 2005

Despite the fact that the mountains and land just stop when they reach the left side of the painting - and despite the fact the sun, mountains and fields all look rather fantastic – this is one of my favorite digital paintings to be converted into art prints.

This was the second time I had even tried to paint figures – the first was out my window.  But this time, I saw the pickers – I saw the curves in their backs – I saw how unbelievable their posture really was – and I felt they had to be in the fields of the painting.

I don’t know that anyone likes this as much as I do – being fantastic and real perhaps takes away some of the power.

I don’t really know; but I know that I still see this scene daily – the colors have been changed to protect the innocent – but the backs remain the same.

ambiguity and breaking from convention don’t shake essence

Big Valley1 - to gallery page and art print options

Big Valley 1 – Digital Painting / Art Prints – Dan Beck 2005

I featured this piece once before but didn’t really write about it. I don’t really remember creating this digital painting, but looking at it today – I can flash to where I must have been viewing – looking west out over the Salinas Valley with the Gabilan mountains behind.

There is an ambiguity in this piece in regards to how the hills are sitting – how the fields intersect – it captures without being particularly literal.

I love this aspect of art – not just in my own – when something looks very different from convention, yet is unmistakable nevertheless.

The essence of a thing is not always what we assume it to be.

Appreciating Light and Texture in Digital Painting

dark enhances light and warmth – texture adds interest to simple color scheme

Sea of Backs - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Sea of Backsdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

There are a number of things I like about how this digital painting came out.  First off, there is a shading going on which implies a rather glowing source of light.  I had wanted there to be the feeling of warmth – even though everyone is bundled up because that is how it is.

There is also an incredible texture going on in the fields themselves – a little more fabric-like than the way the fields look from a distance – but only a little.

I have been able to develop my palette in a new way which is giving me a broader texture range. It is on the border of being overdone here – but I think it really helps this piece hold together – particularly since there is really very little color here – except in the minute details.

Art prints of the above digital painting are available only by emailing: specialorders@outhousestudios.net.

CrossFields Like a Crossroads

creating composition from a section of scene

CrossFields - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

CrossFieldsdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005

Everyday I drive by this scene, I think I should really do another piece – the fields are all different colors right now – including bright yellow.

But the scene is not inspiring me right now – just intellectually. When I did this – I was wrestling with a problem. I knew the stripes and different level fields fascinated me – but wasn’t sure how to turn it into a painting.

When I saw how small the figures were and how much further away it all really was – I had no choice.

The challenge was to make a piece which at a glance would be interesting. One that would hold a strong enough design to be compelling even without seeing the entirety.

I felt like I accomplished what I set out to do – though like most work – not everyone will see it that way.
