watercolor transparency with digital overtones

Two Pick 2 - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2007

Since this image is in the center of the blog banner, I thought I would feature it again. This piece shows off some of the digital nature of its inception.

Many people looking at my finished pieces think that they are watercolor – in many ways they have the characteristics. They are layered and the colors are somewhat translucent and that quality of water comes through.

But then again – there is just about always something which cannot be done using watercolor. And my position, is one of using what I have to express myself.

In the above digital painting, I used patterns as part of my paint on the strawberry mounds. And I think that is a bit of a digital give away.

composition for a non-specific subject

Quick Study 2 - Dan Beck - digital painting for art prints - 2007

Quick Study 2 – Dan Beck – digital painting for art prints – 2007

The process of creating is almost always interesting. By the time I got to this stage, this digital painting was no longer a quick study… but it did start out that way.

I have had enough of an absence from painting – that I did not want to retrieve a subject – this is no place in particular – something I do from time to time – but it definitely is here.

I am happy with the composition – the eye-flow – the richness of color and the feeling it evokes.

Dirt Again

composition and details translate best printed large

Beyond the Ivy Fence - digital painting / art prints - DB 2005

Beyond the Ivy Fence – digital painting / art prints – DB 2005

The fields across the road are dirt again – it is that time of year. This piece was done earlier in the year than now – but as I was looking across the road, I was thinking about this.

Small and on the surface kind of boring – but then again not – the dirt and diamond an accurate portrayal – the ivy articulation a lot of fun.

As with a lot of the pieces in the Impressionist Art Gallery at Outhouse Studios – they were designed and intended to be printed large – they come alive when they are viewed that way – and frankly are just not done justice small.

Perhaps that is a weakness in composition or perhaps it is perfectly ok to not be all things, all sizes.

Composition of the Bend

creatively interpret events, views, and life

Irrigation Bend - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

Being creative is not just about creating things.

In many cases, it is about creating meaning – or finding meaning – not exactly the same things – but either way about creatively interpreting the world.

Today this piece came up partly by clicking the roulette button(chance?) and partly by my being in the figures gallery. It was also displayed a year ago with the piece I wrote about earlier today.

I was surprised to see I had not written about this. It is a strong piece – it also was the first time I had really observed workers wet adjusting the irrigation spray.

Another important connection to this piece is the the last digital painting I did was called “Irrigation Man” and utilizes the same theme but in a more iconic fashion.

Nevertheless, I think it is the first time since the above piece I have painted anything resembling this theme.

The hills, the bend in the road, the stripes of color and texture, and the sky all conspire to make this a really wonderful piece – also much more enhanced when viewed large.

Impression of scene accurate – piece falls a little short

Shades of East Boronda - digital painting - Dan Beck 2004

Shades of East Borondadigital painting – Dan Beck

Creating art is a lot of times about solving a problem. What I saw was a crazy incline of dirt and as a result – nothing behind it except the Gabilan mountains.

I saw it as a glance – quickly while driving but it was a rather profound image at the time.

Having said that – I don’t think this is one my better pieces.  It achieved exactly what I set out to do – but turns out in my eye to not have been enough.

Despite that I like the feeling of the mountains and the feeling of the dirt – even the composition is ok – balanced but not too symmetrical.  And of course, the art prints are also better than the digital painting.

I see art as a metaphor for life – I am not alone in this – I did what I set out to do – perhaps this is akin to "being careful what you wish for".

contrast of color, checkerboard fields, Santa Lucia foothills

Foothills Contrast - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Foothills Contrastdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

While driving on River Road up and back along the Santa Lucia foothills last week – I was struck by the incredible color of what was some sort of neglected weed or cover crop.

Despite being essentially dead – it was a remarkably vibrant gold color with some brown mixed in – it was checkerboard strewn through the green fields.

The contrast was amazing and left a strong impression. The glow and contrast is what’s left – the composition pales a bit – but is close enough to communicate.  The grape vines in the foreground – were not in the scene of the impression, but are quite plausible for the area this is from – and it definitely makes for a more interesting view.

I do like the trees.

image fits watercolor paper by design – gives unique look

Art Print of Mound 2 Mountains

photo of Art Print from digital painting Mound 2 Mountains

This is a photo of a 13 x 19 inch print of my most recent digital painting. I wanted to show how it fills the page. The size of the digital painting was designed to fit this size paper with the smallest margin possible on the Outhouse Studios in house printer.

It curves in because the camera wasn’t perfectly centered – I didn’t take the proper time on this one – sorry. But nevertheless, I think it gives an idea of how a print can look. I think the thin border of white is actually pretty cool and shows off the uniqueness of the digital medium.

CrossFields Like a Crossroads

creating composition from a section of scene

CrossFields - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

CrossFieldsdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005

Everyday I drive by this scene, I think I should really do another piece – the fields are all different colors right now – including bright yellow.

But the scene is not inspiring me right now – just intellectually. When I did this – I was wrestling with a problem. I knew the stripes and different level fields fascinated me – but wasn’t sure how to turn it into a painting.

When I saw how small the figures were and how much further away it all really was – I had no choice.

The challenge was to make a piece which at a glance would be interesting. One that would hold a strong enough design to be compelling even without seeing the entirety.

I felt like I accomplished what I set out to do – though like most work – not everyone will see it that way.

Art Prints to Capture Glow of Light

influenced by late afternoon glow on the mountains

Afternoon Glow - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Afternoon Glow – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

I think "influenced by" – is a good way to describe the forces behind this painting.

Starting without a composition in mind – not necessarily my favorite way – I could not escape the incredible vision from the prior afternoon – somewhat overcast yet also shining right on the mountains.

There is an incredible light here in the late afternoon – quite often this time of year. I don’t think there is any way to do it justice – but my hope was to somehow hint at the feeling of glowing and the warm bath of light.

I didn’t have a particular spot in mind – more like a plausible scene – and mostly hoping to catch the feeling of the late afternoon light shining on the Gabilan mountains or Santa Lucia for that matter – as it happens on both mountain ranges, but only in the afternoon.

favorite images work printed small or large

Art Prints starting at $95

I was looking at this page of original art works starting at the above price. I have been in the process of making sure all my website pages are coded correctly for HTML and this one I was cleaning up today.

That process is not so related to art – but I thought looking at this page that the works are very pleasing as a group together. They comprise many of my favorites from the last year.

Part of what I like about them is that each of them looks good whether printed small or large. This is something I always strive for – but don’t always succeed.

I am proud of the images on this page – and I suppose it would be a good place to start if one were looking to own a piece of art and needed help narrowing it down.
