digital source yields originals - accurate printing yields intentional work

I am not the only one who does digital painting, digital art, or computer art. A search of any of the above yields millions of results and no doubt thousands of artists.
Much of what I am excited about is the fact that the art print from a digital source is an original. There are no reproductions - just prints.
True - the image was created by looking at a monitor version of the piece - and in a sense that would be the original - but no more than the lithographic stone is the original.
Because the print is the place one truly views the work first - the printing aspect is critical. At Outhouse Studios, there has been systematic experimentation to get it right, and systematic experimentation with the professional printing company used for the larger pieces as well.
Without that aspect - the work would still be original - but not particularly intentional.

Darkness of painting and boldness of sky pave way for accurate printing

Twilight Glow - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck - 2005
This piece has significance for me in a number of ways. First off - it works despite an inordinate amount of brown. Half of the digital painting is dirt. Even lacking in detail as it is small, it still seems to be balanced.
The mountains have this smooth coolness as does the whole piece generally, but the sky is incredible - beautiful and dramatic - as it was - a fine impression of that evening.
The other significance was that this piece forced me to improve the way I was printing. I had thought I had found acceptable settings, but the darkness of this piece proved I had to rethink and come up with a better way.
And I did - and all my prints are more accurate as a result. Printed paintings always look better at Outhouse Studios.

Full size printing brings out dramatic changes - accurate printing takes practice

Material Mount View - digital painting - 2004 - Dan Beck
When I first found a printing company who could do the quality of printing I wanted on fine watercolor paper, this was the piece I chose first to print large.
When I created it, I used a template (e-canvas) I had created which had the maximum pixels I could create with - given the program with which I paint. It was intended to be printed large from its inception.
I chose the piece because of its texture. On the computer I can enlarge a piece and visualize a section at a time at the intended size - but not the whole piece. This particular work looked like it would change dramatically when enlarged.
Despite a number a printing trials, the first piece did not print with correct colors - part of Macintosh to Windows conversion and just the shear trickiness of it.
Many prints later, I am pleased to say, we have printing accurately really dialed in.
