Dirt Again

composition and details translate best printed large

Beyond the Ivy Fence - digital painting / art prints - DB 2005

Beyond the Ivy Fence – digital painting / art prints – DB 2005

The fields across the road are dirt again – it is that time of year. This piece was done earlier in the year than now – but as I was looking across the road, I was thinking about this.

Small and on the surface kind of boring – but then again not – the dirt and diamond an accurate portrayal – the ivy articulation a lot of fun.

As with a lot of the pieces in the Impressionist Art Gallery at Outhouse Studios – they were designed and intended to be printed large – they come alive when they are viewed that way – and frankly are just not done justice small.

Perhaps that is a weakness in composition or perhaps it is perfectly ok to not be all things, all sizes.

monitor can’t take the place of framed artwork

River Run ! - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

River Run 1 – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005

As with many pieces I like, I have already written about this digital painting. It probably comes up in my psyche because I was at the Gallery at the Blackstone Winery over the weekend – and this piece had hung there in a group show last fall – with a wall to its own – it looked really spectacular and made me proud to have done the piece.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to convey that kind of feeling over the internet. This piece does look good small – but it really comes alive large – and of course there is nothing quite like the simplicity of having a simple framed piece on a light colored neutral gallery wall.

This is much the way the Salinas River feels like in places – but the mountains are never quite so close – major liberties were taken – and I don’t even know why – but I do like the piece.

a new approach to creating size

Irrigation Man - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Irrigation Mandigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

It is probably wrong to write about art prints without having actually printed a piece, but it is actually printing as I write… well half of the piece is printing while I write.

By design, this is a two part print – two sheets of Japanese watercolor paper 13 x 19 inches – together yielding an image 19 x 26 inches – with a subtle seam – that at least on my first attempt at this – looked pretty cool.

I am realizing that this is much larger than one can see on the screen and I should at the least create a detail so there is a better sense of size… when I get the printing under control.

What I anticipate is lush, textural – large enough to practically feel the spray and imagine oneself in this world.

art can be about communicating in different ways

Twilight Glow - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck -2005

Twilight Glow – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck – 2005

Having already written about this piece and the printing challenges it held, it still struck me as one to write about today.

I printed this piece so many times, I actually burnt out on it – but today I like it – as I have for quite a while.

The balance is different – I guess because the show takes place in the upper third and gets cooler as one looks down – but it is balanced – it is fun (like the fourth of July) even on too dark of a windows monitor.

I am particularly partial to being able to portray something without being all that close in one’s representation – perhaps in the way a single line can denote so much.

Art can say so much in its own different way.

Impression: Not Snapshot of Reality

Art prints & fields of color more pleasing large as intended

Yellow Field Green Hills - digital painting / art prints - DB 2005

Yellow Field Green Hills – digital painting / art prints – DB 2005

Like most the pieces in the Impressionist Art Gallery, the digital paintings were intended to be printed large – yielding art prints at a minimum size of a 24 x 30" framed print.

Although I don’t see this as one of my all time best, I do find it remarkably pleasing – particularly since it also seems a bit imbalanced in some ways.

The funny thing is that there are certain perspectives where the mountains feel this ludicrously tall and the fields were indeed this yellow.

Nevertheless, the piece is about impression not a snapshot of reality.

grows on you; you enjoy being inside finding surprise

Houses on the Hillside - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

Houses on the Hillside – digital painting / art prints – DB 2005

Just like what makes a good piece of art, what makes a good art print is really about how it is received.

I would never say beauty is in the eye of the beholder – for to me that would relegate it to relativism and nothing.

Some people love fast food over all else – I have seen someone go buy it in place of a gourmet meal – more than once I might add.

But my digression, is only to say that an art print should grow on you – it should be a place you enjoy being inside looking at and a place which continues to surprise you.

Unfortunately, one can not know for sure unless one buys a piece and lives with it. Which is one of the reasons I suppose these art prints are such a great way of buying original art – there are a number of economic options.

Digital Painting Potential, Fun & Memory

memory alters impression – emotion requires expression

Viewing Out - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2004

Viewing Out – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2004

I remember this evening – I went out to see a small art show in a bakery in Sand City – there was said to be some "computer generated art" – it really was more akin to digital painting – one of a kind – artist does one print and saves nothing.

I don’t think that utilizes the digital potential very well, but that is neither here nor there. The work was fun – and the evening took me to a party which was also fun.

And the sky is the sky of that evening – and the view is from a hillside of a back route into the area where one can see this section into the Monterey Bay.

The representation isn’t that close to reality, but it is also a lot closer than one would think.

current experiment in large art prints made by combining sheets of watercolor paper

Bold Glimpse - Digital Painting 2006 - Dan Beck

Bold GlimpseDigital Painting/ Art Prints – Dan Beck 2006

I wrote an article about this piece which I don’t think I can improve upon – it was poetic and captured the evening in words enhancing the visual front and center.

Today I bring it up for different reasons. First it remains one of my personal favorites – in some way I feel like this is uniquely me – though undoubtedly there are other pieces which are even more so.

Secondly, I have not as of yet had a reason to have this printed large. It has just become an experiment of printing half a piece on my largest capable size watercolor sheet (13 x19″) – and piecing the two together.

From what I have been able to do so far, I think it might work – gluing will be the key. And I am too sick to glue (a cold). At the very least is will be stupid – but fun. But who knows it may prove to be an economical way of printing larger pieces at Outhouse Studios proper – particularly if they are designed to be done that way.

a comfortable pleasing piece

Valley Comfort - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Valley Comfort – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

This is the last digital painting I created and it is also a particularly pleasing piece to me. Not just because I was using a mouse again – but also the subject matter make this a comfortable piece.

I like the cross angles of the fields and the way it makes my eye move. I like the different texture in each section – the furrowed dirt and the chunky first turning of the dark soil.

The green fields are velvety enough and do give justice to how these fields can feel. But I think I like the mountains the most – the trees, the texture and the transparent quality depending upon where you look – it feels like this to me.

celebrating the plowed earth

Field2Mount - digital painting - art prints -2005 - Dan Beck

Field 2 Mount – digital painting and art prints – 2005

I actually have already written a good article about this piece. But as I was both looking at all the recently visible dirt and also my most recent painting – I was thinking about “Field 2 Mount”.

Here more than anywhere is a celebration of how cool the earth looks in its plowed formation – the remarkable height – the remarkable texture.

It is strangely inviting – despite being so brown. I don’t understand it – but I choose to honor it.
