not letting a powerful piece stop the creative flow

Mountain Sails - digital painting - gallery page Mntn Sails Again - digital painting - gallery page

Mntn Sails Again         Mountains Sails

One of the things I have noticed about myself when it comes to creating is that I tend to not want to try to do something again if I feel like I hooked it the first time.

After I have recorded music, I find that I no longer want to play the songs I have recorded – particularly if the recording came out really well.

With art it is the same thing – the first digital painting above I have always really loved. It has a visual uncertainty – between sails and mountains – water and sky – that was not intended but rather landed upon.

The second piece was years later – trying to create the same visual ambiguity – it is a good piece and a fine art print but I don’t find it nearly as strong.

Whether it is something new or something old, not all pieces will be as good. It is not worth getting intimidated over previous work ( I tell myself) – creativity works best without too much competition – including one’s own.

creating composition from a section of scene

CrossFields - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2005

CrossFieldsdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2005

Everyday I drive by this scene, I think I should really do another piece – the fields are all different colors right now – including bright yellow.

But the scene is not inspiring me right now – just intellectually. When I did this – I was wrestling with a problem. I knew the stripes and different level fields fascinated me – but wasn’t sure how to turn it into a painting.

When I saw how small the figures were and how much further away it all really was – I had no choice.

The challenge was to make a piece which at a glance would be interesting. One that would hold a strong enough design to be compelling even without seeing the entirety.

I felt like I accomplished what I set out to do – though like most work – not everyone will see it that way.

digital medium conducive to representing layers of water washed sand

Beach Today - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2003

Beach Today – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2003

I wrote about this piece in July. One of the things I like about the new Blog Guide by Images is that I can keep track. If I do choose to write about the same digital painting again, I can be sure to write from a different angle.

Today I am writing because I was lucky enough to be at the beach yesterday. And today, I clicked on the gallery chance button which landed me in the Landscape Art Galley – clicked on the image roulette button which took me to this painting.

While I was looking at the water and sand yesterday, I was thinking how conducive the digital medium is for portraying the beach and the layers where the water has washed.

I was also thinking that I had not done that many pieces of the beach and well…

I better go more often.

depth confusion and overlapping colors created unique painting and art prints

Mount 1 - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2004

Mount 1digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2004

I am surprised that I haven’t written about this piece.  It is one of my favorites.  I am particularly partial to the way the vegetation is portrayed at the base of the mountain.

There is a very strong collage quality to this digital painting. The overlapping of color gradient transparencies looks like it was created with tissue.

But then again – just the slightest bit of looking and one can see there is something more modern going on – in what is a take from impression of Fremont Peak.

I actually love the way it is unclear as to what is in front of what. I have kind of abandoned that in more recent works – but I actually enjoy that depth confusion here.

printed piece improves upon monitor image – despite being original canvas

Field Flat - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Field Flatdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

I really like the colors in this piece. I like them on the monitor and even more printed with archival ink on watercolor paper.  But as I have said, that is the nature of this medium.

The work has the light quality viewed on a monitor and is actually closer to viewing the original canvas than any other medium, but it doesn’t really look finished until printed.

It may well be our bias for paper or canvas – but I think that one just needs that solidity to really pull it together.

Despite that I am happy to share my work over the internet.  Like everybody’s art, it generally can’t do it justice – but it is still wonderful to be able to see so much.

Feeling of new digital painting

creating in new ways, good results still looks a lot like other work

Afternoon Glow - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Afternoon Glow – digital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

Though I firmly believe it is the process of creating and the journey that is important, it is also quite nice to get results.

In any piece there are always features which are like other works – one has to use some of the things which work – because we are result oriented even though we might be trying new things in new ways.

The fields in this digital painting were done differently and have a height and texture which I had not really tried for before. And the mountains incorporated a few different techniques but combined in a new fashion.

And yet, for the most part – it looks a lot like a lot of my other pieces. The house and building in the hillside give a sense of distance – and though this is not a specific place, it is quite right on for what one might see here.

Mostly, I just like the way the piece makes me feel – I think because of how much I like it here.

Appreciating a Digital Painting

no longer featured on website home page – image has great color and qualities

Cloud Over Sprinklers - digital painting and art prints - 2005

Cloud Over Sprinklers  – digital painting / art prints – 2005 – Dan Beck

I just did a little update on the website homepage and this piece is no longer shown. I figured it was time for a little change.

And no matter how much I like a piece, it is important to keep moving things around and of course keep creating new.

With that said, there are things I particularly appreciate about the above digital painting. The colors themselves have that wonderful Autumn clarity. The clouds wisp over an artificially large round sun – yet the size works well.

The irrigation could be easily misread unless of course you are privy to this type of view – because it is very textural and very much of a “what is that?” if you haven’t seen it before.

Finally, this piece also manages to capture the hilly terrain. It is simple but says a lot. And the colors are every bit as luscious printed – actually more so.

Digital Painting Bending Backs Again

unique figures – identical dress – same theme – different feeling

Sea of Backs - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Sea of Backsdigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

When I first wrote about Bent Over Crowd I mentioned that it could have been entitled “Sea of Backs” – I knew I had to do it again.

So I started with a landscape orientation and starting painting in figures. I wanted them rather monochrome – but not so simple to be silhouettes.

It is interesting that the piece which came before has so much color but the figures and dress are so copied throughout.

This painting has unique figures throughout, yet they all look the same. Either way, I think it is my point that despite knowing better – it appears that the pickers particularly when they are bent over and in mass – look like a swarm, a crowd, or a sea of backs.

pattern of people and field – the stamp of repetition

Bent Over Crowd - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Bent Over Crowddigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

This digital painting feels different to me – I am not totally sure why – it is a pretty common theme now.

I see the workers in the fields every day – bent over swimming between the strawberry rows. I keep doing what I can to portray what I see and each time I approach it slightly differently.

This reminds me of a stamp somehow – the pattern of people and field – the repetition of similar body shapes – the coupled pickers – the same colored hats and scarves – each picker anonymous – each picker a cog, a clone – each one seemingly interchangeable – and yet the whole scene peaceful and pastoral.

Visual Similarity: Fields and Water

hidden figures are fun and hint at wading

Under the Corn - digital painting / art prints - Dan Beck 2006

Under the Corndigital painting / art prints – Dan Beck 2006

I didn’t mention the aspect of water in this digital painting when I wrote about it recently. It is probably obvious that I see similarities between the fields and the ocean.

I entitled an article about a similar piece: Wading through Fields because of the similarity there as well.

When people are partially hidden by crops, by hills, or by corn one can’t help but interpret in the way one sees water – well I do anyway.

I think this piece is fun on a lot of levels – the hats behind the corn – picking the unknown strawberries – and I have forgiven myself the interior design colors – they seemed to work despite themselves.
